EU Elections 2024: Insights from analyst Gledis Gjipali on the political scene, as shared with RTSH 24, 6 June 2024
Invited to discuss the European Parliament elections on RTSH 24, Integration Expert Gledis Gjipali emphasised the rise of far-right extremism coupled with pronounced Euroscepticism in Europe, highlighting its impact on the continent’s political landscape. According to him, voter turnout is increasing in Central Europe, while in Western Europe it remains low. Gjipali explains that this is often due to the perception that the European Parliament has limited competencies and primarily addresses day-to-day issues rather than significant European matters. He underscores the strong influence of political affiliations, which leads to lower interest in European elections compared to local or national ones. Additionally, Gjipali notes that voter turnout does not affect the number of representative MEPs for each country, suggesting a rethinking of the budget and mentioning several instruments that could help Albania in this regard. Gjipali points out that some countries’ national elections coincided with European Parliament elections, affecting the representation of MEPs in Parliament. In conclusion, he states that while the current approach appears positive, we must wait until the end of the elections for a more accurate conclusion.
