Report TV – The EU requires legal amendments towards the recognition of same-sex marriages by 2028! Revision of the Criminal Code on hate speech, 14 May 2024
On 14 May 2024, a discussion roundtable on LGBTQI community’s entitlement to the enjoyment of all rights at “Europe House” was convened, organised by European Movement in Albania in cooperation with Pro LGBT organisation, with the participation of legal experts, activists and members of civil society participated, as well as the special presence of the European Ambassador in Albania, H.E. Mr. Silvio Gonzato. Activists stressed that learning openly in schools about sexual orientation to address hate speech, bullying and appearance-based discrimination is seen as a priority necessity. The legal expert of the LGBT alliance, Dea Nini, emphasised that discrimination is more widespread among students of elementary and high schools, based on recent conclusions of surveys. As a precaution, she proposes training teachers to address these issues in schools. In this activity, H.E Mr. Silvio Gonzato requested the fulfillment of the commitments that Albania has taken in the framework of the negotiations with the EU, including the amendments in the Criminal Code and the Family Code for the recognition of civil cohabitation and same-sex marriages until the year 2028. He highlighted the importance of improving laws to combat hate speech and to recognize cross-border same-sex family relationships. The LGBTQI community in Albania has repeatedly expressed concerns about hate speech in the Criminal Code, putting the emphasis on the article dealing with sexual crimes that has a special treatment for homosexual relationships, which requires amendments to ensure equality.
