SYRI TV – Gjipali: Meloni’s visit to Albania was a component of the election campaign for the European elections, 5 June 2024

Invited to SYRI TV, Gledis Gjipali, Executive Director of the European Movement in Albania and Integration expert, discussed the migration agreement between Albania and Italy and Giorgia Meloni’s visit to Shëngjin. Gjipali described this visit as an electoral one in the context of the European elections on June 9th. According to the expert, the visit to Shëngjin aimed to confirm the electoral promise Meloni had made during the elections, and this was the sole topic of the press conference with Prime Minister Rama. Gjipali characterised the agreement as a self-offering by Albania to solve an Italian issue, namely the refugees, and expressed concern that if there are management problems, it remains to be seen what will fall on the Albanian side, as the risk exists, even though the camps are planned to be closed and the refugees will not be allowed to leave. He concluded his analysis by noting that many difficulties will be encountered in implementing the agreement, involving not only security but also health, education, and social issues, and that this is primarily the responsibility of the Italian side.
