MCN TV – Gjipali: Limiting the right of veto accelerates EU membership, but it is not a political proposal, October 23, 2025
Invited on MCN Live, Gledis Gjipali, Executive Director of the European Movement in Albania (EMA), commented on the developments of the past month and their impact on the integration process of the Western Balkan states. Gjipali stated that the Berlin Process no longer holds the same importance it had at the beginning, when it started as a political alternative for the Western Balkan countries, at a time when the EU had made it clear that there would be no enlargement in the next five years. The political-level dialogue has functioned, he said, but the development of projects has been less successful and has not produced the expected impact, compared to other instruments that the EU is currently using. Gjipali added that, in order to integrate into the EU, besides convincing the European Commission, Albania must also convince the member states that it has made sufficient progress. Furthermore, he emphasized that limiting the right of veto, at least temporarily, could accelerate Albania’s EU accession. However, he noted that there has not yet been any political proposal, and that an institutional reform within the EU would be necessary to make this possible. In closing, Gjipali stated that for Albania, reforms in various areas must ensure tangible benefits for all segments of Albanian society, including the media, businesses, consumers, civil society, and others.
