MCN TV – Resolving Priority concerns – A Prerequisite to EU membership/ Gjipali: A priority in negotiations! 2030? A possible objective, 16 October 2024
In an interview on MCN TV, Gjipali stated that property issues have been prioritised by the European Union. He emphasized that it is time to seriously consider and resolve this problem once and for all, especially given the increasing pressure from the EU. Since the right to property is a fundamental human right, there can be no EU membership without guaranteeing human rights. However, it is positive that this issue has been placed at the forefront of the integration process. The benefits following the commencement of negotiations are numerous, including the financial support that the EU provides for this process. Part of this support goes directly into the budget, while another portion is allocated through various infrastructure projects. Additionally, interest groups such as farmers and small to medium-sized enterprises receive assistance in meeting European standards. This implies that there will be higher costs for businesses and, consequently, for citizens. Gjipali further adds that we must gradually prepare for these costs; firstly, by providing timely information, and secondly, by developing instruments to mitigate these costs, whether from the EU or those created by Albania itself. After membership, there will be free movement of workers, and this should be one of the areas where we need to be cautious in order to retain people here and create opportunities for them to stay in the country. Otherwise, we will face socio-economic problems. As an expert engaged in the newly established Anti-Corruption Commission in the Assembly of the Republic of Albania, Gjipali asserts that reforms in the justice system will continue. Regarding Albania’s goal of membership by 2030, he believes it is achievable, but it remains uncertain whether Brussels will be ready to give the green light.
