Invited to Ora News, Gledis Gjipali, Executive Director of the European Movement in Albania (EMA), addressed the proposal put forward by several key EU member states (Germany, France, the Netherlands, Belgium, and Luxembourg) regarding the possibility of partial or phased integration of candidate countries into the European Union. He explained that this approach aims to prevent the enlargement process from being blocked by bilateral disputes or the rise of Euroscepticism within the EU.
Analysing this scenario, Gjipali noted that Albania and Montenegro, as two of the most advanced countries in the integration process, may not be affected by such a framework if they succeed in rapidly fulfilling their accession obligations. Regarding the overall integration process and the objective of closing the negotiating chapters by 2027, he assessed the current progress as positive. However, he stressed that accelerating and deepening reforms remains essential, alongside revitalising the process through greater involvement of civil society and experts. Asked about the current domestic situation and ongoing protests, Gjipali underlined that civic protests represent a healthy sign of a functioning society and demonstrate citizens’ active participation in democratic processes.
