A2 CNN – Gjipali: Merz’s letter is a positive development, with a positive approach, 22 May 2026
In interview on A2 CNN, Gledis Gjipali, Executive Director of the European Movement in Albania (EMA), outlined the objective of closing 10 EU accession negotiation chapters by the end of 2026, stressing that this will necessarily require greater transparency and the involvement of the private sector. Keeping official negotiating positions confined within government offices and failing to consult the business community risks increasing unforeseen costs, reducing the benefits for citizens, and weakening public support for the EU integration process.
During the interview, Gjipali also commented on German Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s recent proposal for an innovative approach to accelerate the integration of Ukraine, Moldova, and the Western Balkans by providing them with interim benefits before full EU membership. He described the Chancellor’s initiative, addressed to the EU institutions, as a positive geopolitical development, while expressing scepticism about its practical implementation due to the EU’s complex decision-making procedures and the unanimity (veto) system.
