ABC News – Strategic importance of the letter of 7 ministers, Deliu: Albania’s accession to the EU should be accelerated, 1 March 2024

The integration expert, Nirvana Deliu, was invited to ABC News Albania to provide her analysis regarding the ministers’ letter on the role of Albania and the steps to be taken towards the EU. Deliu sees the signature on this letter, which was mostly performed by Central and South-Eastern European countries, as a positive assessment for Albania. It is mentioned by Deliu that Italy is among the significant nations that have backed Albania’s EU membership. Deliu emphasized that while it is still too soon to declare with certainty that Albania is free to start the opening of chapters, it is clear from the letter that these seven nations, along with their foreign ministers, have recognized the significance and value of geostrategic positioning. Deliu claims that the letter should be interpreted in light of the Balkan region’s strategic significance as well as its economic importance, given that it was sent right after the summit for the new Growth Plan. She revealed that the Greek Prime Minister was among the first to set a date for admitting the Western Balkans into the EU, thereby establishing a target timeframe for the reforms to be accelerated. Deliu added another extremely encouraging point, all EU institutions are in favor of the enlargement.
