7pa5 – The geopolitical consequences of the war

The Executive Director of EMA, Gledis Gjipali was invited on March 3rd, 2022 on Vizion Plus TV to discuss the stance of European Union in the conditions of war. He pointed out that Russia’s pressure increased with Ukraine’s EU orientation bringing back to attention the case of Crimea. Gjipali stated that countries that had not previously shown interest in joining NATO lately have begun to consider it due to the Russian risk. Moreover, Ukraine’s request for immediate NATO membership was interpreted as an important political message but EU treaties prevent that sort of action. Gjipali added that due to the pandemic, the financial crisis and the rhetoric of some member states against enlargement and foreigners, the European approach to the Euro-Atlantic integration processes had faded in the recent years, but the conflict is bringing the focus back to it. He also provided a short analysis of the current situation between Serbia and Kosovo initiated by Kosovo’s request to join NATO.
