ABC News / A2 CNN – Europe shifts right / Deliu on European Elections: There were no major surprises, 10-11 June 2024

Integration Expert, Nirvana Deliu, has asserted that there were no major surprises in the European elections outcomes. She emphasises that coalitions known as pro-European still hold the majority of supporters. According to Deliu, it was surprising that the party of French President Emmanuel Macron did not secure the first position in France. In certain countries, the outcome came as a surprise, but overall, it unfolded as foreseen, with the dominant left and right-wing parties securing the majority of votes and parliamentary seats, as it was predicted. There is also a noted rise in coalitions that are more right-wing extremist, such as the reformists. Overall, Deliu notes, it is observed that those parties or coalitions known to support the EU are strong and together make up the majority in parliament. However, it is also important to comprehend the dual nature of voters in this context. The expert notes that voters in the European Parliament cast ballots in their capacities as Europeans and consider issues from a larger, more global perspective, while in national elections, the interests are more local and directly impact the people living in that nation. As she wrapped up her speech, Deliu brought up Beleri’s election as an MEP, calling it a political ploy and expressing hope that it would not affect the Albanian judiciary’s decision about the mayor of Himara’s guilt or innocence.
