Alsat MK/ABC News/Ora News – European Elections / Gjipali: No changes expected in policies towards the Western Balkans, 7-10 June 2024

Integration Expert Gledis Gjipali states that no changes are expected in the policies towards the Western Balkans following the European elections. However, he notes that a rise of the right-wing is anticipated in some important EU countries, such as Germany and the Netherlands. Gjipali emphasises that expectations for the Western Balkans enlargement are low since the elections determine the seats of European Parliament, which has little impact on this process. It is uncertain whether meeting the obligations will secure the entry of Albania and the Western Balkan countries into the EU, he says, keeping in mind that these elections, lasting four days, allow 360 million citizens of the 27 EU member states to vote. Gjipali highlights that far-right candidates have become common and have set records over the past 20 years. He adds that this institution does not have a significant impact, but the elections are a measure of the political pulse in each country. In some cases, the expert notes, the elections are a test for the government and have national importance. Gjipali brings to attention the case of France, where the strengthening of the right-wing has prompted the testing of the electorate in general elections, shaking the impact of the majority. The expert concludes by reiterating that these are normal trends over the past 15 years, with the rise and strengthening of the far-right, impacting not only the Western Balkans but also Eastern European countries.
