MCN TV – Second Intergovernmental Conference with the EU / Deliu: Problematic chapter is consumer protection, 9 October 2024

Invited to MCN TV, Nirvana Deliu stated that the Second Intergovernmental Conference will be held on October 15, where there will be representatives from both sides, from Albania and the EU, both in a negotiating position, setting the tasks and responsibilities for the 5 chapters of Cluster I, as this conference will mark its official opening, and subsequently, the opening of other clusters will begin periodically. Regarding the chapters where we struggle the most, Deliu mentioned that this will be indicated by the EU in the Commission’s report for 2024, which will assess the level of progress and development for each chapter. The 2023 report clearly shows that in the majority of chapters we have an average level of implementation, and one of the most problematic chapters for Albania remains the protection of consumers and public health, where we have a preliminary level of preparation. When asked about the real possibilities of being part of the EU within 6 years, Deliu explained that it is difficult, challenging, but not impossible. There are now some fundamental changes in the EU following the parliamentary elections with the rise of radical right parties, which have never been friendly to EU enlargement, so in this regard, we will see how this will affect the enlargement process. She further stated that the reforms we need to undertake are clearly defined, and we need to have a better cooperation policy with member states to convince them that we truly deserve the process. Meanwhile, regarding the current level of Euroscepticism in our country, she clarified that the results of the Western Balkans barometer for this year show that countries like Albania and Kosovo have very strong support from citizens, reaching figures of 80-90%. In conclusion, she clarified that Euroscepticism in Albania is more related to the fact that Albanian society believes that Albania is not yet ready to join the EU.
