Open Discussion: Information on the framework of European Integration
On 15 October 2014, the European Movement Albania (EMA) with the support of the Friedrich Ebert Stiftung (FES) organized an Open Discussion on “Information on the framework of European Integration” with the participation of journalists and researchers. The aim of the meeting was the presentation of the online magazine “EuroSpeak”, as an important tool to reduce the current gap of information on various topics about EU; and provide qualitative and independent analysis that goes beyond the poor listing of facts or politicized statements on integration encountered often in the media.
In his welcoming speech, the Director of the Friedrich Ebert Foundation (FES) Mr. Frank Hantke talked about the fruitful cooperation over the years between FES and EMA. Initially, he presented the relation between the two strategic partners: Albania and the 28 member states of the EU, stressing that the decision to join EU depends on the work done in the country. According to him, the integration reforms should not be seen as an aim in itself but as a result of an effective systematic work. After mentioning the criteria to be fulfilled by Albania, Mr. Hantke underlined the fact that the involvement of citizens has a special significance in the process. “Informed Citizens have the opportunity to look critically the benefits and costs of Albanian membership in the EU and be more cooperative in the process, as opposed to those uninformed.” Second, Mr Hantke stated that there is no trust between Albanian citizens and state authorities- services are not adequately provided. The trust between actors can be built through comprehensive qualitative information, monitoring and investigation. Third, FES Director stressed the importance that Albania has for EU, arguing that it has been a stabilizing factor in the region of South-Eastern Europe, and continues to be a good example of religious tolerance. Information about these matters will have a positive impact on increasing the confidence of Albanian citizens on Albania’s path towards EU. Mr. Hantke concluded his speech by supporting and evaluating the online portal “EuroSpeak” initiative as an important information tool in the country.
Mr.Gledis Gjipali, EMA’s Executive Director brought to the public attention the establishment of “EuroSpeak” magazine 3 years ago, as the only informative window on EU issues. He said that the new online format will create facilities and will serve as a database for students, young researchers, public administration employees in all areas, business stakeholders and other groups that have an interest on EU issues. He presented the structure of the magazine in some sections as:Special reports on main EU integration-related topic; Opinions/interviews with prominent national and international actors on recent developments, with focus on Albania’s path to the EU; Postcards from the EU that will be a review of the best articles of interest on EU affairs appeared in the international press; Awaiting EU accession, a section dedicated to news and events of interest in neighboring countries affecting their path to the EU and/or relations with Albania; Blog area where youth will be particularly encouraged to develop blogs/special interactive rubrics within the website. This will help develop a more analytical debate, particularly among students, on Albania’s progress to the EU, and wider topics. In conclusion, Mr. Gjipali mentioned that “EuroSpeak” magazine publications are not only focused on news in Europe’s countries, but on others as well, which have an impact on EU policies. He stressed that the time factor should be used in the most effective way to improve the country’s image and to provide the best results.
The event was followed by questions and comments from the participants. They showed interest on ES in particular, and also about further procedures on Albanian accession to EU. The audience suggested the magazine to be introduced among audiences in other cities of Albania.
