Policy Brief – Unlocking the Gates: Fostering Collaboration for Effective Organized Crime Prevention in Albania, March 2024

This policy document recognizes the importance of the challenge of organized crime in Albania and proposes recommendations to improve the fight against it. Despite efforts to combat it, organized crime persists, requiring a comprehensive approach. The document emphasizes the importance of implementing the principles of Security Sector Governance, particularly accountability, transparency and democratic control, in order to restore public confidence and promote effective oversight of security institutions. It addresses challenges within Albania’s strategic framework, such as limited civil society engagement and funding mechanisms, and highlights the importance of including vulnerable groups in prevention strategies. In conclusion, author Romario Shehu emphasizes the urgent need to address gaps and challenges in order to increase efforts to prevent organized crime, advocating for governance reforms, increased cooperation between civil society and security institutions, and dedicated funding mechanisms. to effectively mobilize stakeholders and mitigate the widespread impact of organized crime in Albania.
