Syri TV – Is the EU accession scenario stalled? Gjipali: It will be a difficult choise, 25 March 2026
Invited to Syri TV, integration expert and Director of the European Movement in Albania (EMA), Mr. Gledis Gjipali, commented on the joint proposal made by Prime Minister Edi Rama and President Aleksandar Vučić for accelerated integration without obtaining voting rights, a proposal which was rejected by European Commissioner Marta Kos.
Mr. Gjipali emphasized that this proposal is almost impossible, as Schengen-area criteria are much stricter and require years of approval for the completion of processes. Another aspect he highlighted was access to the market or free zone while bypassing the fulfillment of the country’s democratic standards, which are fundamental conditions.
Furthermore, Gjipali explained that our country is closer than ever to joining the Union, with all chapters having been opened and with a strong position compared to other countries. However, the European Union structure has its own procedures, including the requirement for the green light from the IBAR (Interim Benchmark Assessment Report), for which Albania is currently awaiting an assessment regarding the fulfillment of interim benchmarks for Chapters 23 and 24.
In conclusion, Mr. Gjipali explained that the process has intensified and monitoring mechanisms have increased, along with positive pressure from other member states. The approval of the IBAR report would allow the closure of several chapters; otherwise, the process would remain stalled, which could affect the quality of the accession process.
